Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Or why young people in Spain prefer marijuana.

So kudos to the Oscars committee for awarding insane, inter-dimensional adventure film Everything, Everywhere, All at Once. Great movie, right?  But what’s that got to do with preferring marijuana? Read on…

A few days back, we were amused to find out that there’s a drinking game to get involved in if you ever watch the film with the gang.  Seems that every time someone says “Evelyn”, you knock back a shot.

Well, maybe it could be fun but we’re actually much more in agreement with the young people who took part in a poll in Spain.

A study carried out (2023  Fundación FAD) found that almost 70% of those surveyed between the ages of 18 and 34 believe that marijuana is less harmful than regular consumption of alcohol or tobacco.

Whilst just over half the people who took part in the study recognize that there are risks inherent in smoking this illegal substance, the majority associate the risk with legal problems – getting stopped and fined by police – or problems with studying (who of us hasn’t sneaked a joint when we should have been concentrating on getting that essay in) – or  even getting drugs-tested at work. A few were worried about the development of mental health problems, but we’d refer you to this article.

This study is a follow-up study to a similar questionnaire in 2016.  As a result, the authors see that a higher percentage of people in the stated age group now have feel that marijuana is less detrimental health-wise than alcohol, and that more are clamoring for the government to ease up on current legislation which strictly limits consumption and, of course, the sale and cultivation of cannabis. Marijuana Games is fully supportive of their views! We have argued long and hard for de-stigmatizing and legalizing the flower. Unfortunately, Spain is dragging its feet on this topic.

Despite this growing perception, it also has to be reported that the number of young people in 2023 who think that the laws on cannabis should be hardened is also slightly up on 2016.  (24% has now risen to 33%.) This shows a growing polarization – a polarization that is more and more evident, sadly, in many more areas of our lives. Is this really a world of tokers vs. drinkers?

I mean, thinking about it, we really do live in a society where alcohol is considered not just normal but the mark of an adult where getting drunk is considered part of the process of growing up becoming an adult…… a rite of passage, even.  Later on in our working lives, too.  If you’ve had a hard day at work then have a few drinks and forget about it until tomorrow. Every celebration marked throughout our life is accompanied by alcohol. But here comes the crunch, more and more health experts are telling us that alcohol is a no more no less than a very potent poison.

BUT, if you’re up for watching Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, and want to adapt that drinking game, we happen to know that there is a hybrid strain called Evelyn. The Evelyn Strain is a cross of two of Melvanetics anchor lines, Buckeye Purple and 1989 NL5. This strain’s smells and flavors range from the deep wine of the Buckeye Purple to the rotted fruit funk of the 89 NL5. If you’re lucky enough to find  it on a menu at a club, check out its beautiful purple color.

Back to the survey. Are those who perceive that marijuana is safer right about the lack of risks? According to some figures, it is estimated that 3% of marijuana smokers can become problematic. This compares to between general addiction rates of between 15 and 22% for alcohol.

Hopefully, there will be more funding for in-depth studies which will observing the longer term effects of marijuana smoking as more and more countries and states legalize it. Certainly there are ongoing studies on the positive effects cannabis can have on health.

At Marijuana Games we believe in responsible and safe consumption but we also stress that it’s just so important that people be well informed to make safe choices.

Please note that Marijuana Games does not sell cannabis nor does it promote its use. But, because we truly and passionately believe that all adults should have safe access to cannabis, we have carefully selected some legitimate, private cannabis social clubs where our friends will be secure and the product is not tampered with chemical nasties like some stuff you can find on the streets.
