Cannabis – An ancient superfood.

So, you’ve survived the New Year celebrations.  Maybe you were thinking about dry January/giving up smoking but then decided that wasn’t a great idea.

Right now, you may be tempted to add a few superfoods into your diet.

Not so long ago they were heralding almond milk, enriched with vitamin D, and chia seeds full of quality protein. Now it seems it’s all about baobab, brimming with antioxidants, and amla (Indian gooseberries, to the uninitiated!), bursting with vitamin C.

But it seems that way, way before all these trending superfoods convinced us to chuck a few into the supermarket trolley, ancient Chinese warriors were munching on cannabis seeds.

Archaeologists made this discovery when they were excavating the tomb of Guo Xing, captain in the cavalry of the Tang dynasty (618-907).  This Chinese warrior was buried with Sativa cannabis seeds.

This, in itself, is not that uncommon since archaeologists have made similar discoveries throughout China and have postulated that cannabis was used for medicinal purposes, as a textile and for ceremonial celebrations.

However, in the case of Guo Xing, the cannabis seeds were discovered with other foodstuffs in everyday pottery vessels.  Experts believe that this is a clear indication that the seeds were intended for eating.

What’s more, the archaeologists found no trace of rice in the tomb, leading them to think that cannabis seeds could have formed a more important part of the diet than the afore-mentioned grain.

Cannabis, an ancient Chinese superfood! Whaddya know!

At this point, we probably need to put one of those “DON`T TRY THIS AT HOME” waivers up!

Honestly, better NOT start chomping on the seeds given that the variety of seed discovered, whilst of the Sativa variety, contained a much, much lower concentration of THC.Top 10 Barcelona Weed Strains

When you consume edibles, THC is processed in the liver and transforms into a more potent form of THC called 11-hydroxy-THC. This chemical takes anywhere between 30-90 minutes to kick-in and the effects last anywhere from six to eight hours. This form of THC is also more effective at crossing the blood-brain barrier, lending a stronger and more sedating experience than other consumption methods.

Remember that the actual onset time and length of an edible high depends on many factors, including dose size, overall tolerance, and the user’s unique metabolism and the endocannabinoid system. The Co-Evolution of Man and Mary Jane

Importantly, if you’re used to consuming by smoking, start low and go slow with edibles to avoid taking too much without giving your body the time it needs to metabolize the edible.

Additionally, the marijuana plant packs a nutritive punch providing your body with Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, minerals like Zinc and Phosphorus, and antioxidants that help the body fight aging.
