Barcelona Cannabis Club Review: Green Age

Green Age cannabis club in Barcelona is quite possibly the city’s best cannabis social club. With original artistic decor, a marijuana selection unlike that of any other dispensary and a few special surprises that I’ll tell you about in the review below, Green Age cannabis club is a smashing example of everything that a good smoker’s organization should be. The club manages to be hip and chill, abstract but down-to-earth, exclusive but warm, and above all else – dedicated to the cause that we’re gathered here for: freedom to use marijuana.

**************UPDATE FEBRUARY 2016**************

Over the last couple of years a lot has changed at Green Age. At various times the club has stopped accepting new members, or required a 2 week waiting period that invariably turned into much longer periods of time. At this time I don’t recommend this club as the most recent practice reported to me was a waiting period of more than a month, followed by acceptance as a member, followed by temporary rejection as a member pending approval after a visit to the club’s “doctor.”

Even if the membership process was not so difficult, most people (myself included) report that Green Age is almost always empty. Gone are the days where the club was full and had regular events. Furthermore, if local rumors turn out to be true, it’s possible that the club may soon close.

I still value my relationship with the Board and staff of Green Age and I wish the club success, but I can no longer recommend Green Age. If this changes I will post another update. For now, if you’re feeling nostalgic, please read the post below about my experience at the club near the end of 2013.

Green Age: The Story Behind the ReviewClock lounge at Green Age in BCN

I was introduced to Green Age through an associate of mine who runs a small cannabis-related website. At the time it was early December and a cold snap had gripped Barcelona for a few days, but we decided to walk to the club from Placa Cataluña despite the chilly weather.

My companion talked about the president of Green Age during the walk, touting him as a man of conviction and wily acumen. We talked about some other things too, but he never really mentioned what the club was like. So when we arrived and walked into a beautifully decorated foyer, I was a little taken aback at the clean, modern and stylish setting.

It turns out that this is just the way my associate is; he rarely talks about the clubs we go to prior to our arrival. Instead, he lets me make my own conclusions after some careful observation, and then we discuss it to see if our views are similar. But I think just about anyone who goes to Green Age will have to agree that the club is absolutely second to none.

Green Age: Environment

Lounge area with couch at Green Age

The outside door to Green Age is more tasteful than that of any other cannabis club in Barcelona that I’ve been to. Instead of unmarked commercial aluminum and glass doors, Green Age warms you right from the beginning with a beautifully crafted hardwood door. This leads to a small entryway to get you out of the cold or heat while you wait to be buzzed in to the main reception area.

Once inside we were greeted by a cute young lady who spoke to us in rapid-fire Spanish. I struggled to follow along but eventually fell behind, letting my associate talk with the girl while I surveyed the lobby. It was elegantly decorated with items of intelligence and compassion; a chess board here, statuettes of animals there, and lots of welcoming earthy wood tones.

Upon entry to the main part of the club, there is a lot to take in. As you enter a long and wide corridor, there are small themed seating areas on both sides. The themes aren’t really specific – it’s more of a feeling than a particular theme. Some feature a mixture of strangely arranged clocks, some have antique mirrors and some have whimsical art. A woman who works at the club told me that some of the artwork was created by the club’s president, who gave new life to items by creating art made from things that had been discarded by society.

The dolls in the picture frame are an example, but I’m not sure if the same art I photographed at Green Age in early DecemberArt made by the President of Green Age cannabis club 2013 is still there today.

Some of these mini-lounge areas feature plush armchairs or even couches, while others have tables and chairs. One just has a small table and rows of string where dozens of notes have been strung up. Cool.

As you continue inside the club, eventually the bar area opens to your right and a large lounge is straight ahead, where you’ll find tons of different kinds of seating – some comfy and some utilitarian, while the walls feature more eclectic art with a couple of flat screen televisions thrown perfectly in the mix.

The lighting in each lounge area is different and is designed to create a certain feeling…I think. That’s the way it seems to me. The lounge area I would want to hang out in would depend mostly on my mood, and Green Age’s mini-environments run the gambit of emotions.

Notes and art on string at Green Age cannabis club

If you walk to the far right of the main lounge, you’ll suddenly see that the long and wide corridor you went through in the beginning is now repeated on the other side, complete with more mini-lounges to discover. But it’s at the end of this corridor that Green Age really makes their mark on the cannabis club community in Barcelona; they’ve built a super-hip 50’s weird-retro style diner back there!

There’s a long lunch counter with goodies under glass cake displays, and there’s a cute waitress working behind the bar. In the far back there are several tables and lounge chairs where you can get a bite to eat and relax. It’s amazing! This one feature single handedly sets Green Age so far above other clubs that it’d be hard to imagine a more appealing setup.

Seriously, this is the problem with other clubs; you’ve got people smoking the best weed in the world and hanging out in the clubs for hours, but when they inevitably get hungry, they either must leave or sustain on the vending machine snacks offered by most clubs.

Not at Green Age. Here you can medicate yourself, take a spiritual journey or just laugh with friends, and then you can savor a delicious sandwich or homemade quiche, or you can gorge on fresh cookies, cakes and pies. This is a massive bonus in my opinion and is the true definition of a 5 Star club. In fact, based solely on services alone, Green Age beats out all other 5 Star clubs in Barcelona, including my long-time favorite, Abcda.

Green Age: Marijuana Selection

Green Age also has a unique offering of marijuana strains and hashish that you just won’t find elsewhere in Barcelona. I had been frequenting 6-8 other clubs at the time, and I was definitely noticing trends not only in their weed menus, but also in the menus of other clubs that I checked out but did not become a member of. Green Age bucked that trend completely, and at the time I reviewed their menu selection, they were the only club in the city that I knew of offering these particular strains:

Shiva Shanti
Medicine Man
Big Bud
White Shark
NUKEN
Shishkaberry
Green Spirit

I picked up some of the Nuken, and as you’ll see in the review for the Nuken strain, I was quite impressed. This bud was just as beautiful as Green Age’s decor.

Main lounge area at Green Age BarcelonaAdditionally, Green Age offers some interesting hash types including some powerhouse hash that might be out of reach of the average member. Overall the marijuana and hash offerings at Green Age aren’t massive, but are unique enough and potent enough to please even the most demanding weed snob.

Green Age: Events & Extras

Green Age has the usual selection of pipes, papers, filters, grinders, sodas, tea, water, coffee, etc. available at most clubs. But this club also offers edibles on a regular basis. At the time I first went to Green Age, I had been looking without success for edibles in Barcelona, so I was quite pleased when I saw a huge plate of cookies on the lunch counter.

Green Age hosts a number of different events including DJ nights, live music, theatre nights, games and tournaments, holiday celebrations, samplings, magic shows, dancing and more. As far as I am aware, Green Age has more events – and more unique events – than even the busiest tourist-oriented places like Kush and the Dragon. The main difference is that Green Age’s events are geared more toward local members instead of every Tom, Dick and Harry that comes looking for weed in Barcelona.

Green Age can definitely keep you busy. I’ve been a couple of times in the middle of the day and the place was a little slow, but there were still plenty of people around. More importantly, the ratio of men to women is much better at Green Age than most other clubs that I have seen.

Green Age: StaffStudy lounge - Green Age

The motto of this club is “We are family,” and it seems like they really mean that. The staff has always been extremely courteous and professional while still being quite welcoming – it’s a nice change from some other clubs where the staff is about as stoned and careless as the average tourist on La Rambla. I’ve talked with the girls at the bar, the girls at the front desk, and the waitress behind the lunch counter, and they are all extremely friendly. If you ask a question, they’ll know the answer, and if they don’t they will find out for you. Awesome!

I gained permission from a manager of the club to take some photographs and he was exceptionally accommodating, telling me that “we are family,” as if I shouldn’t have to ask to photograph my own home.

I also sat in on a meeting between the club president and my friend from the local cannabis website, and though I had trouble following in Spanish, I can tell you that the man is impressive in the sense that he truly cares about the experience people have at his club. He’s also passionate about the health of the private cannabis club community in Barcelona, and works to ensure that whatever his club does, it is done the right way the first time.

Conclusion

Seating at the restaurant in Green Age BCN

There’s only one thing that I don’t like about Green Age, and that’s the electronic card that you must use as a member. It works like this; once you become a member, you will be issued a small card that looks a lot like a credit card. It contains some information about you, and you must use it to get products at the dispensary and the lunch counter. This means that you must put money on the card before you can do anything. You do this by giving cash to the person working the registration desk, and they put this cash in the form of electronic funds on your card. You then use your card at the bar or restaurant, and the money is automatically deducted from your account.

I don’t like this, as it means you’ll always have some money locked up in your Green Age card. For instance, I didn’t know how much money I was going to need when I “charged” my card one day, so I put 40 Euro on it just to be safe. However, I only spent around 20, so now I have 20 Euro sitting on that card, but I’m temporarily traveling out of country. This means that money is inaccessible to me.

If I was in BCN at the moment and wanted to use that money somewhere else, I couldn’t do that. This is frustrating and makes meShiva Shanti offered by Green Age in Barcelona feel like I have to manage an account for Green Age. I don’t want to balance an additional account log. I want to get some quality marijuana, relax for a minute and be on my way, without worrying about how much money my card does or does not have.

Of course, I understand that Green Age is probably doing this to keep vigorous records to be certain that their members are in line with all Spanish regulations. In fact, new regulations have been passed by legislators in Spain and more are on the way to tighten up Barcelona’s traditionally loose-knit group of clubs, and I can imagine that Green Age wants to stay abreast of these changes and keep perfect records. However, I still find it annoying, and you might too.

Green Age is perfect for a romantic and quirky first date, a business meeting or a gathering with friends or family; in fact the club is appealing for practically all events and occasions. And with a “highly” unique marijuana selection, it’ll keep cannabis connoisseurs happy and continually coming back for more.

  3. Great review Russ!
I’m from Italy and I will be within six days in Barcellona! How can i become a member of this social club? Do they have an email? Thanks

    1. Hi Umberto; if you are not a Spanish national or holder of NIE, Green Age will not accept you for membership, sorry. Also, you need to be sponsored in person by a current member. You should probably read some of my most recent blog posts. Peace -Russ

  4. Went to his club on our honeymoon in Europe, thanks to Russ. It was an absolutely amazing experience — we met the owner, enjoyed a welcoming club and had a blast. The only bad thing was having to come back to the very very strict rules in the USA (well, our state anyway) :).

    1. Hi Nikki; Thank you for your kind words! We’re proud to have you as members are are pleased that you had a great time. I understand what it’s like to return to the old outdated ways of most of the United States. I have been in the US for most of the summer, and as of today it has been 2 weeks since I smoked pot! It’s really hard to find in the area I am in right now, thanks to backwards laws and bad attitudes. Oh well, I return to Barcelona in a couple of weeks and hope to see you guys at Green Age soon! Peace -Russ

  5. Hi Russ,

My wife and I are new to Barcelona and just read the above review. We would love to become members of Green Age. Please email me to let me know next steps.

Thanks, and we love your website! Keep up the good work.

    -Chris

  6. Hey Russ. I emailed you earlier, but it occurred to me I provided scant details of our location. It turns out Green Age is a wonderfully short walk from where we’re staying. So if you’re about, give me a shout. Would be great to meet you. Thanks.

  7. Hey Russ, I am with a group of friends and we’re staying in Barcelona for a week at the moment. We are interested in finding a cannabis club while we’re here and this Greenage place looks very nice . Just wondering if you could give us a bit more info on how we could find it and become members or recommend somewhere more suitable. Thanks

    1. Hi Nate; Green Age is an excellent club, however, their board of directors has recently changed their policies, tightening the requirements for new members. We can discuss it further via email: russ@marijuanagames.org. There are often other options available as well. Peace -Russ

  8. Hi Russ,
Myself and two of my friends have booked a 4 night stay in Barcelona recently and we really would love to experience the cannabis clubs, to be honest, its the main reason we are going. We have a friend who lived there for a couple months and when he told us about the clubs we booked a flight the next week. Our problem is we cant decide which club we would want to try and join. We would of loved to try out the Greenage but unfortunately we are all 19-20 so I dont think they would allow us to even apply. Is there another club similar to this one perhaps with an over 18s policy and not over 21s? Or is there even one you could reccommend to us?
Thanks so much in advance and hope to hear from you soon Russ!

Happy smoking from Peter and friends.

    1. Hi Peter; right now I don’t know of any good clubs that are accepting members who are under 21. That may change in the near future, so check back soon. Peace -Russ

  9. Hey Russ! I am already a member of Greenage and it is a great club. Which other club do you really recommend? For me it is all about the potency of the cannabis that matters!

  10. Hi russ, I have been going through several f your reviews and found them very interesting. I am leaving for barcelona tomorrow and just going for a short break to see some of gaudi’s fabulous artworks with my brother and step dad.We will be staying in port & rambla and we are all smokers; I’mm 22, my bro is 18 and my step dad is 40. I was just wondering which club you would mostly recommend that is near by and whether you would be able to sponsor us for whichever club that may be. many thanks, keep doing what youre doing, and peace out dude x

  11. Green Age was a fun and welcoming place. It’s large and offers a few different ambiances to relax in- couches, tables and chairs, a bar, etc. It felt natural to strike up conversation with other members- I met friendly, interesting people from various countries. One night there were people jamming (acoustic), at one point they were showing a football match on a projector screen.. Overall, I loved it and will be back 🙂 Thanks Russ!

  12. I came here while visiting last month in Barcelona thanks to russ sponsoring my membership. This club was so awesome. Centrally located right on Avinguda Diagonal, it may be a bit hard to find as it is somewhat hidden in plain sight, but well worth the trip. I only got to go here once, but the 20 euro membership fee was still worth it as it was a very cool, chill environment. Come by for a coffee, watch some TV and chat with the locals. The staff was very laid back and helpful all at the time same. The product was top notch. I wish I could have come here more than once on my trip. However, I am holding on to my membership card and will definitely come here again next time I’m in BCN.

I owe Russ a thousand thank yous for sponsoring me and opening up my eyes to the beauty of BCN Cannabis Clubs.

  13. We were in Barcelona for Sonar Festival and Russ very kindly helped us get membership to the club. It was a most worthwhile experience and I will definitely be going again very soon.

A note to future members – Don’t be put off by the seemingly expensive membership fee of 20 euros. It is well worth the investment and the experience alone is worth the price.

    Thanks Russ!

  14. We just returned from Barcelona, where we went to the GreenAge almost every evening. Although the personal doesn’t really speak English and we don’t speak a word in Spain or Catalan, they were really friendly to us. It was always nice to be there, espially on the last evening watching the WorldCup game on a beamer in first row from a sofa! Thank you again, Russ, for sponsoring us!

  16. Russ, thanks so much for sponsoring me. I went along last Friday and it was really a very cool place.
Many many thanks again Russ. I’m so happy about my membership! 🙂

  17. I was at Green Age this week, had my membership sponsored by Russ. Everything was just great! It is a warm and welcoming environment indeed, felt like home. Totally matches the review. Thanks again Russ!

  18. Hi Russ, a very good and accurate review and an excellent website altogether.

    1. Hi Craig;

Thanks for your comments! Barcelona is a great place, but the cannabis club scene is still relatively unknown in the rest of the world, comparatively speaking. I also was already in Barcelona before I discovered the clubs even existed. Anyway, I will send you a private message, so check your email. Peace -Russ

  20. Hi Russ,
I am an art enthusiast and avid skateboarder who will be returning to Barcelona tomorrow. I am staying in the el borne neighborhood and would love to check out a new cannabis club, green age sounds incredible! I would greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

i would congrats to you for your huge work, I’m really enjoying it!
Yesterday I friend of mine told that in Barcelona there is the possibility to become a member among one of the weed-club that are in the ciy. So today i started to study and to inform about it. I will come back in BCN in some days after 2 years. If you have couple of minutes I would be very grateful if I could ask you something about the cannabis club and if u can give me some adiveces and tips about it.
    Thank you in advance!
    Ciao!

    1. Hi Steve; thank you for your comments! I get a lot of questions and a lot of emails about the cannabis clubs in Barcelona, so I have written 2 articles that you should read that will tell you everything you need to know:

10 Things You Need to Know about Barcelona Cannabis Clubs: https://marijuanagames.org/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-barcelona-cannabis-clubs/

Barcelona Cannabis Social Clubs Vs. Amsterdam Coffeeshops

Then, just email me the day before you arrive in Barcelona at russ@marijuanagames.org and I will be happy to assist you. Peace -Russ

  23. Great review! I just found this site while searching for a cannabis review.
    Green Age looks sweet.
I’m going to Amsterdam in 10 days and see you are an expert– what coffee shops are best/ non-touristy for connoisseur buds?
Plus, just got info about a Spain tour where I might be in Barcelona in Sept so these social clubs interest me, will have to read more here.

    1. Hi Bob; in Amsterdam I like Coffeeshop Solo for a quiet, out of the way club with good weed strains, although they are on the expensive side: https://marijuanagames.org/amsterdam-coffeeshop-review-coffeeshop-solo/ But you should also read my review of Bulldog on Leidesplein: https://marijuanagames.org/amsterdam-coffeeshop-review-bulldog-in-leidsplein/ It’s a great place. If you want great weed but don’t want to hang out or pay high prices, then head toward Diemen and visit Smoker’s Palace.
