Is Thailand the next weed holiday destination?

Elsewhere on the site you may have read about how Uruguay, ever the progressive country, is considering opening up the country to cannabis tourism. if you haven’t read it, take a look here Will weed vacationing be legalised?

Interesting reading for sure.  And now we’ve been browsing articles about some other vacation staples whose governments are considering the implications of doing just the self same thing.

Firstly, let’s look at Thailand. You’ve seen the miniseries Bangkok Hilton, right?  Bridget Jones was funnier but, still, a stint in prison in Thailand, a country which has a reputation for being one of the strictest  regarding drug use and possession, would be no walk in the park that’s for sure.

Possession of marijuana can mean a prison sentence of up to 15 years, yet a recent announcement that cannabis is to be de-listed as a narcotic may change the way in which the drug is viewed in this country. Thailand’s narcotics board announced in January it would de-list cannabis that has a tetrahydrocannabinol level of below 0.2%, making it the first Asian country to do so. Thailand was also the first in south-east Asia to sanction medical use of marijuana in 2018.

De-listing will come into effect 120 days after the bill is published in the Royal Thailand Public Gazette, after which time people will be able to grow their own plants but they’ll have to register with the relevant authorities. A draft bill to see how to govern cannabis and hemp for recreational use has been submitted. In addition, licenses for commercial growth will be made available.

Already many of the palm-fringed beach resorts  such as Phuket and Pattaya list among their attractions a variety of cafes, spas, and restaurants offering products infused with cannabidiol, or CBD, a compound found in cannabis plants that, as we stoners know, doesn’t provide a high.

The new legislation could help such places expand products such as delicious-sounding cannabis infused honey lime juice or chrysanthemum juice  to include other components of the cannabis plant. Herein lies a world of potential growth in products which could help the hostelry and hospitality sector bounce back bigger post-COVID.

What’s more, the impact on the economy will be massive for rural Thailand if commercial licenses for plantations are up for grabs.

When you talk to people about weed tourism, many envisage a stoner hippy swinging on a hammock hooked between two palm trees with a massive j.  Nothing wrong with that image, of course. Indeed, it’s a rather attractive one! However, given that Thailand offers cosmetic surgery and dental treatment tourism, along with an extensive selection of luxurious, aspirational spa retreats, many pundits are positing that the authorities will push forward with the idea of designated cannabis resorts.  That is to say that tourists will be allowed to consume cannabis recreationally in certain selected zones,  keeping well away from the family resorts-oriented, and which some hope will ideally attract moneyed, music, media and movie types.

We can certainly see ourselves wrapped in luxury and a little hazed out in Thailand.

In the meantime, we’re hoping that other destinations will get with the flow and that their governments just realize the potential benefits of weed tourism. Can we put our hand up and give a shout out to Spain? With a progressive government in power, Marijuana Games believes the time is right for weed tourism in Spain.
